I write this blog to give some tips to anyone who wants to change their wordpress setting from default to Permanent Link. I encountered some problems in implementing this in my website for some reasons (detailed below) but I was able to fix it. I moved to Permanent link because of my brother’s advice (everything-eli.com) that it’s more searchable to use complete “pretty” name than wordpress default setting.

The default WordPress url:

http://nelson.palad.info/?p=3
After changing to Permanent link:
http://nelson.palad.info/install-asterisk-14-debian-etch-4-h323-g729-g723
Detailed Instruction Below:
In my setup, I’m using the following server info:

Operating System: Debian Etch Linux 4.0

• webserver:~# uname -a
  Linux webserver 2.6.18-5-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Dec 18 23:16:23 UTC 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux
  webserver:~#

Web Server: Apache2 version 2.2.3-4+etch4 + PHP5 + Mysql 5 with Virtual Hosting

Wordpress Version: 2.5.1

Okay, below are the steps to follow:

1) Login to your Login wp-admin page: ex. http://nelson.palad.info/wp-admin/

2) Goto to: Settings (right hand corner of the page) –> Permalinks

you will see something like below:

From the image , you can see that the default is: http://nelson.palad.info/?p=123

We want to change this to something like in the Custom Structure to display something like this one:

http://nelson.palad.info/ccna-cisco-certified-network-associate-exam-640-802/

Now, if you get into trouble displaying the webpage after you change to Permanent links you need to double check the following:

1) Make sure that the .htaccess is writable in apache/wordpress.

2) Check the configuration of Apache if AllowOverride = All

3) Check if ‘rewrite’ module is loaded from Apache2.

If you do not know what I’m talking about and you’re just hosting your wordpress to a hosting company, you can just ask it (hosting company) to check these things for you.
